Youngster at Heart

Locally known as “The Rock” back in 1976, a Bicentennial project was launched by the students at Jason Lee Elementary. The project was called S.O.B. “Save Our Butte.” and they rallied to pull weeds, scrape off graffiti and pick up litter at the heavy vandalized park at the top of Rocky Butte. The Oregonian article also published their impressive To-Do list which included:

-clean up litter

-put in traffic bumps

-replace plaques

-fix stones

-put up picnic tables

-install gates

-institute police patrols

-persuade citizen organizations to help.

It appears that the students accomplished many of their goals! The park is in much better shape today than it sounds like it was in 1976, however we are still working to maintain and preserve the area. In a few weeks we will remove litter around the Natural Area to support the city’s team for invasive removal of garlic grass. I hope to see you there!

May we stoke our Inner-Youngster and S.O.B.
