Archival Finds and Landscape Changes

Visiting the city and county archives is something anyone can do! Let me tell you it was a breeze, the faculty were super helpful, the requested documents were pull and prepared ahead of time, and they even offer to digitally upload any particular maps, photos or documents and send them to you!

Here is an image of Rocky Butte from 1938. It was published in the Sheriff’s Annual Report regarding the jail that was to be built near this location. This photographed spot is approximately where I-205 is now, and I’ve compared a modern photo from google maps. It is significant to view these locations and reflect on how much happens, realize how tech and industry changes the landscape, and appreciate how this little volcano called Rocky Butte is still here.
