The Stone House in Portland’s Forest Park is also known as the Witch’s Castle and the basalt stone work was sourced from Rocky Butte. If you have been to the Witch’s Castle, you know its a kind of oddity of the city, a place to bring out of town visitors to experience the lush forest of our hills until you come across the colorful graffiti laden structure in the woods, seemingly out of place. The story of this house is complex and detailed, and it has been told very well by others already!
Did you know it was originally built as a “Comfort Station” Visit this in depth post by Jeff Rumblefish to learn about the specs of the structure and Macleay Park and Balch Creek .
Did you know the story of the Balch Family is associated with one of Portland’s oldest acts of crime? Visit this video by Steve the Historian to learn about the history and see footage of the stonework.
Hopefully you can make it out and visit this Stoney Witchy Castle Structure soon! Visit this map and take a hike!
